TARRALEAH

Our Story

"Tarraleah – A Walk on the Wild Side"

A special place with stunning views of the Tasmanian Highlands and wilderness, and once the home of hundreds of Hydro pioneers.

First scouted in the late 1800’s, the site was initially cleared as part of the Hydro development in the area during the 1920’s and 1930’s.

The Aboriginal meaning of ‘Tarraleah’ is “Forrester Kangaroo” and the site is host to an enormous range of Tasmanian flora and fauna. It is quite possible to see platypus and quolls, wallabies, wombats, devils and echidnas all on the site all on the same evening, whilst some say the Tasmanian tiger is also about..

Today it includes a spectacular look out point, a range of walks, exciting Tasmanian wildlife, a golf course and a range of holiday and luxury accommodation options.

The Lodge was originally built in the 1930’s when money and craftsmanship were no object. It was the centrepiece of the Tarraleah settlement and was originally built for the Hydro engineers and the Company Directors. The Lodge spiralled into gentle decline during the 1980’s and 1990’s until its transformation in 2006. The Art deco exterior now houses a contemporary and luxuriously comfortable nine bedroom small luxury hotel – a showcase of Tasmanian art and craft.

The Cottages at Tarraleah, hand built by Tasmanian craftsmen in the 1930’s and furnished with care, these self contained one to three bedroom holiday cottages are charming, warm and comfortable. Architects Cottages contain original Art deco pieces or more contemporary Tasmanian work;.Engineers Cottages are a little more original. Bring the family and friends and make it a 'get away' to be remembered.....The Cottages at Tarraleah

But it is our people who really make the difference!
